A short history of the city of Fethiye
According to my studies on Wikipedia, Fethiye has witnessed many events and ups and downs during its long history. In the 12th century BC, the Lycians dominated this region. 6 centuries later, the Persians became the rulers of Fethiye, and in the 4th century BC, Alexander the Great conquered this city.
After the death of Alexander, this city was ruled by the Ptolemies and then the Romans. This city flourished as an important port city and trade centre during Roman rule.
Many ancient monuments such as the Roman theatre, Amyntas tomb, and rock cemeteries have remained in Fethiye from this era. In the 4th century AD, with the division of the Roman Empire, Fethiye became part of the Byzantine Empire.
In the 11th century, the Seljuks conquered Fethiye, and then, in the 15th century, the Ottomans dominated the region. During the Ottoman era, Fethiye returned to its heyday as a maritime trade centre and an important port for exporting agricultural products.
In the 19th century, the prosperity of Fethiye declined due to civil wars and political unrest, and in the early 20th century, the city was occupied by Italy. In 1923, with the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, Fethiye joined Türkiye. At the end of the same century, the city of Fethiye in Turkey became known as a popular tourist destination, and economic development and prosperity started again.
