Is It Safe To Swim In Turkey? | Are There Sharks In Turkey?

Can you swim with sharks in Turkey?

Many people want to swim and dive in the seas of Turkey during their trip. Like you, I am very interested in visiting the beaches of Turkey and swimming in the Sea. For this reason, before my trip to this country, I researched the waters of Turkey and their dangers. I discovered that different sharks live in the Mediterranean and black Sea, but seeing these Sharks is uncommon on beaches, especially where people swim, and tourists should not worry about this.

After I traveled to Turkey and visited its different cities and beaches, I gained many experiences about swimming in Turkish seas, which I will share with you.

Is there sharks in Turkey?

I have visited the beaches of different cities such as Istanbul and Antalya and swam both in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, and I have never seen a shark in the areas where people swim.

According to the information from “www.fao.org,” sharks are found in both the Black and Mediterranean Seas. But their number is decreasing, and you should not worry about them attacking the swimmers. However, people who intend to dive in the deep parts of the Turkish seas should learn more about the habitat of sharks from the local people before diving.

Is It Safe To Swim In Turkey?

In my experience, swimming in areas where lifeguards are present is safe because they are watching over you so you don’t drown.

Türkiye is a country with a lot of rain. Therefore, due to the stormy nature of the sea when it rains, the summer season is considered the safest season for swimming on the coast of Turkey.

There are jellyfish on some Turkish beaches, so I recommend you ask the lifeguard about it before entering the sea and wear long-sleeved clothes to avoid jellyfish stings. You can also apply sunscreen before entering the water to prevent jellyfish stings.

An important thing I heard from the locals is that Rip Currents sometimes occur in the Black Sea, which can cause you to drown. To escape the Rip Currents, you must swim across the sea and out of them. I fully explained this phenomenon in the article “Can You Swim In The Black Sea Turkey” and suggest you read it.

Points to follow while swimming

In the following, I will teach you the points you should follow while swimming.

  • Do not swim in the sea under the influence of substances or drugs that reduce alertness and accuracy.
  • Children should always go to the sea under the supervision of adults.
  • Be sure to carry a first aid kit with you because there is a possibility of glass or sharp objects in the sea, and they may hurt you.
  • Before swimming, get information about the weather, water pollution, etc., and never swim in the sea during a storm because it will cause you to drown.
  • Learn about marine animals before entering the sea.
  • Be careful that the place where you swim is far from sewage drainage.
  • Never swim far from the shore because the big sea waves will take you under the water and cause you to drown.
