Nightlife Activities in Izmir

The last time I was reading one of Vincent van Gogh’s books, I read an interesting sentence, that is, “I often think that the night is more alive and colorful than the day”, but is it possible that the night is more colorful than the day? What is your opinion ? I found the meaning of this sentence in the nights of Izmir.

When I traveled to Izmir, I realized how the night can be more colorful than the day, so I decided to write this article and introduce you to the things to do in Izmir at night.

In the following, I will describe to you some of my favorite things that I did at night in Izmir.

Alsancak district

I have visited this whole area many times, and my favorite place is Alsancak Pier. What makes this place more spectacular is the famous Izmir coastal walk, which is located by the sea. On this trail, I walked peacefully, fished, sat on the grass, and rested.

This area is full of different restaurants and bars, and no matter how much I walked there, I never felt tired. At night, there was quiet and live music playing in beach bars and restaurants, which I really enjoyed being there.

Sezer Dogan Street, which is one of the famous streets of this area, is always full of tourists, and the tall palm trees next to the bookstores have made this area more beautiful.

This area is similar to Istanbul’s Istiklal Street but quieter. If you want to stay in Izmir, I suggest you book a hotel in this area, but note that this area is one of the most expensive areas of Izmir.

Bios Bar

Bios Bar

There is a possibility of security problems in bars, but Bios is one of the safest bars in Izmir, and I always enjoy going there. This bar is located in the Alsancak area, and by going to this, You can also visit this bar in the neighborhood.

The general space of the bar is small compared to the crowd that goes to this bar, and the tables are very close together. But exactly when the music started, everyone got up from their tables and began to dance, and the proximity and distance of the tables made no difference to anyone.

The night I was there, a singer named Ms. Shima gave a very high-quality performance. According to the conversations I had with regular customers, Ms. Shima is one of the regular singers there and performs there almost every night.

I paid 75 lira for the entrance; of course, the cost of food and drink is separate, and I also paid another 600 lira for dinner and 2 glasses of beer.

The positive point of this bar was that considering a large number of people, the service was very fast and regular, but one thing that bothered me a lot was that in order to sell more drinks, the servants kept asking me what I wanted.

Asking once is a sign of customer orientation, but if this is repeated many times, it isn’t interesting at all, and it isn’t very pleasant.

My presence in this bar lasted until 3:00 a.m., and one thing that attracted my attention was the presence of women in groups and alone, who were in the bar until 3:00 a.m., which shows the high security in this bar.

On special occasions such as Christmas, Valentine’s, etc., you must reserve a table in advance.

  • Working hours: 21:00 to 04:00

Izmir Arena

Izmir Arena

If you are only in Izmir for one night and only have the chance to go to one place, my first and last suggestion is Izmir Arena.

If you get lucky and go to this place during a special festival, you will understand the meaning of a real nightlife!

I attended a local music concert at Izmir Arena and knew nothing about the area before going there. This complex is outdoor, but it has a very strong sound system, and everyone can hear the music well.

I bought the ticket through the website, which cost 500 lira, but it was really worth more than these words.

According to the official website of Izmir Arena, the working hours are 9 am to 8 pm, but in reality, it is not like that! Some concerts and celebrations at this gathering center start at 9pm.

Izmir Arena is located by the beach, and there are two old piers around it, which makes it very pleasant to sit or walk along.

Around the concert venue, many booths sold all kinds of food, Turkish souvenirs, clothes, etc., which I visited when leaving the concert.

Among the problems of this complex are the small number of parking spaces and also very expensive parking spaces. There were also few WC and ticket check gates, so the queues were sometimes long.

Fortunately, this complex has an active website that announces all concerts and celebrations along with the entrance fee a few days in advance.

Konak Square & Izmir Clock Tower

Konak Square & Izmir Clock Tower

One of the interesting things I did on the nights of Izmir was visiting the clock tower. The clock tower was built in 1901 and has an octagonal view with a height of about 25 meters.

This tower has 4 floors, and other attractions such as Konak Mosque, Konak Wharf, Kent Historical Park, and Kemeralti Market are located around it, which you can visit if you have time.

The building of this tower is made of white marble, and there is attractive stonework on its columns that caught my eye.

You don’t have any restrictions to visit this tower and you can see this tower anytime of the day or night, but visiting it in summer nights when the weather is cool is more enjoyable.

The first time I visited this area was at night, and it was very crowded. At every corner of the street, a number of people were gathered together, and many people were standing in line selling street food.

The location of this tower by the sea allowed me to visit the sea and walk along the beach at the same time. The pigeons that were around this tower created a beautiful atmosphere for taking pictures. Feeding these pigeons made my night’s peace complete.

  • Cost of visit: free

Gazi Kadınlar Sokağı neighborhood

Gazi Kadınlar Sokağı neighborhood

Do not visit this street during the day because during the day, not all shops, bars, and cafes are open, but at night, they are all open and ready to make a dream night for tourists.

The first thing that caught my attention was the old texture and Greek facades of this area, which were very beautiful.

The number of bars, clubs, cafes, and restaurants in this area is very high, but if you go to this area on weekends, you will see that they are all full, and there is no place for those who come late.

This place has hosted the most significant famous events in Turkey, such as jazz and classical music, with many talented artists. You can order your favorite drink in this busy and attractive bar and enjoy listening to live music.

To wrap the whole thing up

In the same way, night life can always be going on, of course, you will understand this sentence when you travel to Izmir. If you had little time on your trip to Izmir and couldn’t stay more than one night, take advantage of that one night and know how the night can be more colorful than the day, as Vincent Van Gogh said.

  1. Izmir is a very beautiful city, if you travel to this city in the summer season, be sure to choose the nights for sightseeing, because the days are a bit hot and it might bother you. But if you go to this city in winter or autumn, don’t choose night for sightseeing. If you really like to go out at night, be sure to wear thick clothes, because Izmir is very cold.

  2. We traveled from US to Turkey in 2022 and stayed in Istanbul for 10 days. Since we heard about Pamukkale, we decided to travel to Izmir first and then go to Pamukkale because Pamukkale is close to Izmir.
After visiting Pamukkale, we returned to Izmir and visited the historical elevator and clean beaches of this city.
This city was more peaceful than Istanbul and made me feel refreshed.

  3. All these places you introduced are good places. But I want to introduce a better place. When I traveled to Izmir, I found a cafe that had live performances every night, and the atmosphere was so happy and exciting that I didn’t notice the passage of time at all. This cafe, called Bios, is located on Gazi Kadinlar Sokagi Street. In summer and spring nights, this cafe gets very crowded so that sometimes you have to reserve a table to go there.
